SHOCKTOBER: Grace

this film swept the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.  it’s reported that 2 people passed out during the first premiere screening at the festival.  although Grace deals with women issues and maternal instincts, it was written and directed by men.  here’s the plot summary:

Madeline Matheson is eight months pregnant and determined to deliver her unborn child, Grace, naturally. When an accident leaves Grace dead inside her, Madeline insists on carrying the baby’s corpse to term. Weeks later, when Madeline delivers, the baby miraculously returns to life… With an appetite.

Grace is a natural birth control, to say the least.  after finishing the film, i had all sorts of sympathy pains.  it was a touching story of maternal love and the horror that comes along with keeping something alive that should be dead.  not only did this movie perfect the fear of motherhood, it took bloody to a whole new level!

i immediately thought of another horror classic,  Larry Cohen’s IT’S ALIVE and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, while reaching the climax of the film.

i loved the fact that Paul Solet incorporated an organic vegan lifestyle into the film, something not always present in modern films.  having a natural midwife child birth with a past lesbian lover and a mother-in-law obsessed with maternal fantasies, this film has it all!

Grace is gorrifying.  do it: see it.
