Where is the Harm? Please someone point it out to me!

I have had numerous conversations with people regarding the marriage of same-sex couples, and usually the following reasons to not allow it come up

List A

bestiality

pedophilia

poly-

incest

… which can all be dismissed because of a) evidence, b) the harm they cause, and c) the concept of consent.

But let’s look at b) the harm caused. It is obvious what the above harm, but what about gays.  What harm does their getting married cause?

List B

::crickets churping::

Some will argue gays marrying will cause harm – to someone, somewhere, in some time zone but they cannot prove it.  There is no documented evidence that gays marrying will in fact cause any of the a fore mentioned atrocities, break up or harm heterosexual marriages, or create any more or less screwed up kids than the marriages (both hetero and gay) already do.

BUT WAIT – it’s not that they do cause harm, or even will cause harm – it’s the risk that they might!  To me this is like convicting a currently innocent person of a crime they might commit – with no proof – just a hunch… just a fear… maybe just on a suggestion.

::sighs::

I revert to the evidence – there is not any evidence to form a probability of said harm.  I wonder if we could apply Bayesian Theory and if it would show there is a probability of next to none!  Anyone up to the task?
