It's A Queer Party

Good evening, my friends!

It has been a great weekend so far. I love weekends because that is the only time when I get to take a break from school and go to parties. Therefore, even though it may seem like the weekend is over, I am going to take this moment to list my top five songs to play at a queer party. Enjoy!

ONE: The Kinks – Lola

No queer party is complete without this song. Lola is a woman who is a man, get it? And, one night, Lola meets a man in a bar. The two end up spending the night drinking and dancing. The man seems happy to be with Lola though he can’t quite figure “her” out. “Well I’m not dumb but I can’t understand / Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man.” It’s not that hard to figure out. Obviously, Lola is queer. And that is why I love this song.

TWO: The Sounds – Tony The Beat

This is one of the most awesome (for lack of a more professional word) songs I have ever heard. It is straight forward in the queerest way. To know that this is a queer song, perhaps one must read between the lines. Although, I think the fact that the female lead singer — the beautiful, charismatic and openly bisexual Maja Ivarsson — sings, “Hey, Let’s kick it / Stop, just lick it” kind of gives it away. But, if you are not convinced, watch the music video and you will, among other things, see girls making out.

THREE: Melissa Etheridge – Yes I am

This is another song that is not obviously queer. However, after Etheridge came out as a lesbian in 1993, it is hard not to assume that her songs are mainly about women. Plus, in a September 1994 article in People Magazine, Etheridge is quoted saying that this song is “a love song for Julie” — Julie was her girlfriend at the time.

FOUR: Green Day – King For A Day

This is such a cool song. The lyrics are absolutely hilarious: “My daddy threw me in therapy / He thinks I’m not a real man / Who put the drag in the drag queen? / Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.” It seems as if lead singer Billie Joe did try it, at least somewhat, because in a 1995 interview with The Advocate he stated that he is bisexual.

FIVE: t.A.T.u. – All The Things She Said

There has been some controversy about whether or not the two girls that make up t.A.T.u. are queer. However, even if they are not, this song would still be on my top five list because it is brilliant. Listening to “All The Things She Said” is like reliving my moment of realization all over again. When they sing: “I keep asking myself, wondering how / I keep closing my eyes but I can’t block you out” it reminds me of when I fell in love with a girl for the first time and figured out that I was queer.

Much Love,

Jasmina
