Things of note that have been happening, summarised in some words. (I hope to at least get around to posting a couple of these on the days when I don’t feel up to blogging properly, in future. A sentence or two of snarky commentary is rarely completely beyond me, whatever my mood.)
– The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against that school in Mississippi which decided to cancel the prom in response to the intention of a girl to go to a party and to take another girl. This continues to be a bewildering story. The school’s official position is apparently that females are forbidden from wearing tuxedos, and that the girls might be thrown out “if any of the other students complained about their presence there”. So the palaver is apparently focused around an entirely nebulous and abstract concept. There’s no objection to the basic notion of either of these girls attending the prom, but it’s a problem if they do so “together”. They don’t have to do anything in particular once they’re there, to cause offense to some hypothetical other students. They just have to be, together, and they’re intrinsically somehow a problem. That’s deep and metaphysical, and also bullshit. (via Skepchick)
– Also, the current Pope has covered up cases of child rape and actively helped people who have raped children to get away with it. Worth remembering. (via Jerry Coyne)
