I was up till the wee hours of the morning today that’s because I was watching Freddie. If you don’t know who Freddie is don’t worry he is not Freddie Krueger from friday the 13th movie lol. Freddie had an amazing vocals and sang so many wonderful songs… songs that never fails to strike a chord in me. Freddie sang songs like Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow, Love of My Life, Bohemian Rhapsody. Somebody to Love, We are the Champions and many more chart topper songs. Yup I am referring to Freddie Mercury from the band Queen.
Two most notable songs for me that he wrote are Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow and Love of My life. I can see through him, I could feel his pain, I could understand the inner turmoil that was killing him. For those who do not know, Freddie wrote these songs for his ex-lover Mary Austin who he lived with for 7 years until he got involved in a gay relationship which ended his relationship with Mary. In later interviews Freddie gave, he confessed that he never stopped loving Mary even when he was heavily engaged in gay relationships. This is what Freddie said ” All my lovers asked me why they could not replace Mary, but its simply impossible. The only friend I’ve got is Mary and I don’t want anybody else. To me she was my common law wife,to me it was marriage. We believe in each other and that’s enough for me”. After they broke up they remained friends until his death. Mary got married and raised a family but Freddie was always around, he was godfather to Mary’s eldest son. When he died due to complication of AIDS, the bulk of his estate and his royalties were given to Mary. Some he left to his family and some he left to his butler and his gay lover Jim Hutton.
In Love of my Life, you could feel his immense pain of loosing Mary. I know it seems complicated how he got involved with a recording executive that started his gay turnaround. We don’t know for sure what ignited that because he wasn’t gay to begin with only when he started to go up the ladder in the music world. If I get it right in the song it feels like if he could turn things 
around he didn’t want that to happen, he never wanted to loose the one person he loved the most.It sounded he was almost begging her to just stay close and I guess that’s what Mary did, she remained close to him even after all that has happened to them.
It is evident in all recorded shows that whenever Freddie sang this song, that he sang this straight from his heart. It moves me to tears every time I listen to the song because it’s something genuine and pure. You could just feel how much he really loved this girl inspite of being gay. This isn’t just for the sake of selling a record, he wrote the song with all the passion and love he had for this woman and I guess this is the element that draws people to listen to this song and people still listen to this song even after he is gone.
Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow in the way I see it, depicts what happened the day Mary decided to leave him after finding out his gay involvement. It must have been a very sad time for the both of them. I can just imagine how Mary felt when she learned that. It was also difficult for Mary since she loved this man as well and as much as he loved her. However, I guess she could see it would also be hard to stay with Freddie knowing that there would be something else he would be looking for other than what normal couples do. Although she was heart broken there was no other way, than to leave. That must have been a tough decision for Mary but she did what was best for the both of them.
It’s cruel and sad how things turned out for them. Two people very much in love with each other without selfish reasons, but they had to let go. I do believe Mary loved him till the end because even after learning he was involved in a gay relationship, she stood by him, maybe not as a wife (as what she had formerly meant to him) but as a loyal friend who loved him for being him. No one would do that unless he or she loves the person so much. Hats off to Mary and Freddie!
