eHarmony Settles Lawsuit and Agrees to Become More Welcoming to Gays and Lesbians

By Brandon Sipherd

The online dating service eHarmony has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for allegedly discriminating against homosexuals.  All claims against the company will be dismissed and eHarmony will set up a $2 million settlement fund with about $500,000 to pay an estimated 150 Californians for theirs claims as a class.

eHarmony is a California company that uses a questionnaire to help people find meaningful and lasting relationships.  However, the company failed to offer gay, lesbian and bisexual matching services on its primary web site until last spring.  Instead, the website redirected men and women seeking same-sex matches to an affiliate web site, Compatiblepartners.net, for an additional fee.

The class-action civil lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles in 2007, claiming that eHarmony violated a California discrimination law, which forbids businesses from discriminating based on a person’s sexual orientation.

As a result of the proposed settlement, eHarmony will be required to display its same-sex dating services on its main web site.  A same-sex dating link would be added to the bottom of eHarmony’s homepage where there are currently links for Hispanic, African American, Jewish and Christian dating.

eHarmony did not admit any wrongdoing.

A Superior Court judge in Los Angeles still must approve of the proposed settlement.
