February is Black History Month. During this month, African-Americans are being recognized and celebrated for their contributions to science, politics, literature, sports, social justice, and so many other areas.
Today I’m celebrating Hanifah Walidah is a hip hop artist, playwright, actor, music video maker, and filmmaker. I discovered her while watching a documentary called U People http://suckaforlife.com/upodcast/ which I can only describe as a conglomeration of opinionated woman of color.
As a Black lesbian I often times do not see representations of my demographic in the media. It was so fascinating to see the camaraderie and even a sense of history. Hanifah brought these woman together and they looked at what it meant to be black, what it meant to be a woman, and what it meant to be queer. I deal with one or more of these questions on a daily basis.
She is also a soulful singer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HPPlYN0BwI
I admire her artistry and her expression of her sexuality.
