This is going to be a short one, but I just heard about it and I’m very excited. Are you familiar with the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy (DADT)? It means if you’re openly queer, you’re out of the military. Sounds completely unfair, right? Absolutely. Not that I’d be interested in joining the military anytime soon, but what about the millions of others who do and are denied the right to do so? Just because you love men, women, or both, doesn’t mean you”re not good enough to serve the country.
Not only is the policy completely discriminatory, it’s also incredibly costly. For every person discharged because of their sexual orientation, the Department of Defense has to pay up about $43, 000. (More statistics http://gayrights.change.org/blog/category/dont_ask_dont_tell).
But there is hope! Finally, after seventeen long, unjust years of the policy, it is being repealed.
Feels nice, doesn’t it?
