Featuring Kathy Griffin, Christopher Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Sutton Foster, Bryce Ryness First of all, WOW! On Wednesday, January 6, 2009, I was able to meet one of my favorite comediennes and all around inspirations! I had the fortune of seeing her film a guest appearance for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”. My amazing friend Elisa is a trooper and stayed with me for about nine hours on the set! Since I am at a loss here is Elisa wrote at her blog (AKA CHECK OUT HER AWESOME BLOG!):
Today, on my lunch break from work, I returned to the set of Law & Order: SVU and met friend and fellow blogger, Neal B.
During my 1.5 hour lunch break we saw a protest for equality and Kathy Griffin giving an empowering speech. Yes, It was all for the upcoming Feb. 10th episode of the show but oh, the magic of filmmaking, it all seemed so real.
A group of protestors (extras) surrounded Griffin, who plays a lesbian activist, after she was introduced by Broadway star,Sutton Foster (Shrek). SVU member, Detective Tutuola (Ice-T) was in the crowd keeping a watchful eye. After they finished filming the scene, Neal and I stood by watching the actors head to their trailers, greeting Ms. Foster with a “Sutton, We love you!” and grabbing a picture with Ice-T. We began wandering around the seemingly endless blocks filled with equipment, trailers and everything you can think of, hoping to catch another glimpse of Ms. Griffin! Twice we saw Christopher Meloni, who we are both huge fans of but we wouldn’t see Mariska Hargitay, whom we also both love, until much later. Just before I had to return to the office, Kathy walked up, almost heading right toward us. We took the opportunity to ask for pictures and let her know what big fans we were. Neal, if you don’t know, is on a mission to get Kathy to go on the Sex and The City Tourwith her show “D-Listed” [More Info Here] but was too shy to mention it. She crossed the street and began filming a quick scene in which [SPOILER ALERT-highlight to read] she is arrested by police in front of supporters[SPOILER ALERT].
I returned to work, promising Neal I would head back immediately after my shift ended. He called me while I was waiting outside the office with the news that he had seen Mr. Meloni and Ms. Hargitay, much to my jealousy.
Two hours later, I was back on the set, ready to see more! Neal had met up with another friend and we all wandered around hoping for another glimpse of anyone. I forgot to mention, earlier in the day, we had seen Bryce Ryness of the hit broadway musical, Hair {he plays Woof) walking down the street. Well, when I got back, we saw him again and quickly realized he was part of the filming that day (I immediately remembered that Jay A. Johnson was going on as Woof today and everything clicked). We aren’t sure what part Mr. Ryness had but now I’m looking even more forward to seeing this star studded episode!
They began filming on 27th St btw 3rd and Lexington, a scene involving an ambulance. We gathered with other spectators and fans, across the street as we watched Mr. Meloni, Ms. Hargitay and Ms. Griffin rehearse their scene. A short time later they left to head back to their trailers and I of course chickened out in asking for a picture with either SVU star.
After much debate, we decided to try and give Ms. Griffin the DVD Neal had made for her thanking her for being awesome and asking if she’d like to go on the SATC Tour. We quickly ran to the store and bought a snarky card, writing a thoughtful message and putting everything together. And boy were we glad we did. We hung out in front of her trailer, by this time the PA recognized us and I’m sure wished we would just go away. Hehe. She did return to the trailer and was doing some paperwork and Neal was courageous enough to go up to her and ask if she’d sign his copy of The Official Book Club Selection, his copy had no cover so KG seemed thrown off at first then immediately recognized the book, smiling and saying ‘Oh my book! Aren’t you a sweetheart’). She was so kind and one of the nicest people. She gave us both hugs after Neal gave her the DVD; it was addressed ‘To Kathy, From All of your NYC Fans’ and she cracked ‘Oh it’s from the entire city?’ which we got a chuckle from.
That was the last big event of the night. It was SOOO cold so we took refuge in Mike’s Pizza (we’d been in there three times that day and I’d been there yesterday). Great pizza if you are around the area. What a great night and how wonderful it was to see one of my favorite shows being filmed! It was great to hang out with someone who was willing to wait in the cold for hours on end and even better that it was Neal!
